CHEF TRAINING

The Chef Training program is designed for students who are interested in the field of culinary arts. The program provides students with knowledge and experience in planning, preparing, and serving restaurant-quality foods.


Suggested academic aptitudes and/or interests of students interested in Chef Training include:

  • Math
  • English
  • Beginning foods
  • Nutrition
  • French
  • Bookkeeping
  • Work experience
  • Food science
  • Basic computer skills
  • Desire to work with people
Suggested traits/characteristics of potential enrolees are:

  • Finger & manual dexterity
  • Ability to work under time and schedule deadlines
  • Ability to work with numbers and measurements
  • Ability to make sensory evaluation of a food’s taste and smell
  • Interest in people and their welfare
  • Willingness to work with people
  • Stamina
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work as a contributing team member

First-year students focus on basic preparation skills and introductory competencies. Second-year students focus on hands-on preparation, menu planning, and management functions.

Students in the Chef Training program operate the Upper Valley Inn, a full-service restaurant located in the school. The restaurant is open to the public throughout the school year.

Graduates of Chef Training are encouraged to continue their culinary education at a variety of post-secondary institutions.
