Why We Are Here

JVS Programs Promote Eye Safety

Career-technical education provides students hands-on experience in many different industries and professions. These hands-on lessons often require safety precautions, including using the right protective equipment, so that students learn the importance of safety in their chosen field.

This year, more than 35 programs at eighteen Ohio schools received free protective eyewear. Participating Upper Valley JVS programs include: Ag. and Power Technology, Building and Grounds Maintenance, Auto Collision, Auto Services, Auto Technology, Carpentry, Electrical Trades and Welding.

Almost 4,000 safety glasses and protective eyewear were distributed to Ohio high school and career center programs at no cost. Along with the equipment, instructors received information to share with students to also encourage them to protect their eyesight when participating in activities outside the classroom. The overall goal of the program is to encourage eye safety at all times, not just in school programs that require eye protection.

The free eyewear was provided through a partnership between the Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and the Ohio Ophthalmological Society with resources provided by the Ohio Department of Health Save Our Sight Fund.

"I am pleased we can help students and schools by providing essential eye safety equipment, especially with the budget challenges many schools face today," said Christine Gardner, Ohio ACTE Executive Director. "Besides the benefit of promoting eye safety, this program helps career-technical education continue to provide the materials needed to educate our students."

JVS Instructional Supervisor, Terry Krogram, shares, "I appreciate the support from these organizations. This contribution saved each of the students in the participating programs $7. In today’s economy, every little bit helps. The training materials supplied with the safety glasses has been a help in our safety training program. If one injury is prevented, the program has been well worth everyone’s efforts."
