Scott Oglesbee a popular professional musician attended the Upper Valley JVS during his junior and senior years of high school in 1977 and 1978. At that time Scott had already begun his solo performance career as a prodigy pianist, but credits his training at UVJVS with a solid foundation in the technical aspects of the business. Scott was a student in the Radio and TV Broadcasting Program taught by John Villers. Scott says it was an exciting opportunity especially for a young man like himself who was already involved in the music business.
In the Spotlight

The Radio and TV Broadcasting students had daily access to top-notch broadcast equipment - something unheard of prior to the launch of the UVJVS program. “We learned the jargon and operation of industry standard equipment,” Scott shares. The groundbreaking program also included use of sound and lighting equipment, cameras, production, direction, performance, and broadcast.
Scott and his classmates maximized the chance to develop on-air performance abilities as well as technical skills. He laughs as he recalls one class room assignment in particular. One of the funniest times in class was when Mr. Villers asked us to all portray slices of bacon in a hot skillet. Scott says those types of exercises really worked and had the added benefit of helping the students bond.
According to Scott that close bond was and is especially important in broadcasting since so much of the work requires reliance on a strong team. He is still amazed at the depth of what they learned. According to John Villers now UVJVS Adult Division Director the students successfully produced game shows, musical shows, industrial productions, cable shows, civic productions, and educational programs Scott says further evidence of their classroom success is that many of his former classmates have pursued long-term careers in some area of broadcast and performance. Since leaving Upper Valley JVS in 1978, Scott estimates he has provided music for over 3,500 weddings and corporate events. He and Kimberly own and operate SK Music and Entertainment and along with their son Jacob split their time between residences in Ohio and Michigan. SK Music and Entertainment provides music and entertainment for wedding ceremonies, wedding receptions and events throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. In addition to the performance career, Scott has over 28 years of experience servicing pianos in homes, churches, and schools. Scott says his time at Upper Valley JVS provided his fondest high school memories.
Scott returned to the Upper Valley JVS on January 14, 2010 to perform during the Miami and Shelby County Business After Hours. The nearly 300 attendees included Scotts former teacher. Thirty-four years later? John Villers says, “Seeing the positive impact of what we do keeps me charged up every day and dreaming up new ways to help people, like Scott Olgesbee, help themselves.”
